Gracias a la generosidad de los Clientes de Liberty que donaron $96,450 a Liberty Foundation
Los fondos llevaron la Nueva Escuela Virtual a estudiantes y maestros que tras los terremotos enfrentaron también los retos del cierre del sistema escolar por la emergencia por el coronavirus
“Agradecemos la generosidad de nuestros clientes y la confianza que pusieron en nuestra Fundación. Cumpliendo con el compromiso que hicimos con ellos, los fondos se utilizaron para que 2,000 estudiantes de escuela superior y sus maestros de los pueblos de Guánica, Yauco, Guayanilla, Peñuelas y Ponce que se vieron afectados por los terremotos y por la epidemia del coronavirus pudieran contar con una herramienta que les permitió culminar el año escolar”, destacó el presidente de Liberty Foundation, Naji Khoury, también presidente y CEO de Liberty Puerto Rico.
De hecho, los estudiantes podrán continuar utilizando esta herramienta los primeros dos meses del curso escolar que comienza en agosto. La extensión de las licencias para el uso de la NEV busca atender los rezagos surgidos durante el segundo semestre del pasado año escolar, que se interrumpió súbitamente ante el cierre total decretado por el gobierno para frenar el avance de la pandemia.
Los $96,450 fueron recaudados como parte de la invitación que hizo Liberty a sus clientes para que el crédito que se les otorgó por el periodo en que su servicio se interrumpió por el terremoto del pasado 7 de enero se destinara a seguir ayudando a los pueblos del suroeste. Más de 20,000 clientes de la empresa de telecomunicaciones accedieron durante el mes de febrero a donar su crédito a Liberty Foundation, brazo de responsabilidad social de Liberty, para esos fines.
Los estudiantes y maestros que se beneficiaron directamente de este programa asisten a escuelas que fueron declaradas no aptas, por lo que hasta el momento de decretarse el cierre del sistema escolar el pasado 15 de marzo para evitar la propagación del coronavirus se encontraban tomando clases en facilidades temporeras. Gracias a una alianza con la Fundación OE-Innovative Techology for Education, estudiantes y maestros de las siguientes escuelas accedieron gratuitamente a la plataforma de la Nueva Escuela Virtual desde sus teléfonos inteligentes, tabletas o computadoras: Escuela Superior Áurea Quiles en Guánica (220 participantes); Escuela Ocupacional, Vocacional y Técnica en Yauco (567 participantes); Escuela Superior Asunción Rodríguez Soto en Guayanilla (421 participantes); Escuela Superior Josefa Vélez en Peñuelas (597 participantes); y Escuela Superior Dr. Pila en Ponce (195 participantes). En el caso de la escuela de Yauco, por ejemplo, maestros y estudiantes utilizaron la plataforma educativa virtual durante 25,580 horas durante los últimos meses del segundo semestre del año pasado, según se informó en la graduación de los 242 estudiantes de cuarto año. Esto contrasta con lo ocurrido en planteles donde hubo estudiantes que sencillamente dejaron de tomar clases.
“Llevábamos 10 días en las carpas y comenzó la orden de distanciamiento social. Nuestros estudiantes están experimentando desventajas físicas, emocionales y académicas. En estos tiempos de reto, la oportunidad que nos brindan la Fundación Liberty y Fundación OE-ITE para que nuestros estudiantes sigan expandiendo sus conocimientos con la Nueva Escuela Virtual significa que no sólo pudieron culminar el año escolar, sino adquirir todas las destrezas para ser exitosos en el futuro”, dijo María de los Ángeles Ortiz Rodríguez, directora de la Escuela Áurea E. Quiles en Guánica.
La iniciativa “Dale la Nueva Escuela Virtual a un niño” es un esfuerzo multisectorial organizado por la Fundación OE-ITE que busca ofrecer una alternativa efectiva para evitar el atraso en el desarrollo académico de los más de 30,000 estudiantes afectados por el cierre de escuelas posterior a los terremotos de enero 2020. La Nueva Escuela Virtual incluye guías de planeación para los maestros, así como los exámenes, pruebas y ejercicios ajustados a los estándares del Departamento de Educación. La plataforma integra a estudiantes, padres y maestros en un solo sistema y les provee apoyo mediante asesoría y asistencia técnica ofrecidos por instructores educativos capacitados en el uso de la NEV. De hecho, dos estudios independientes evidencian que los estudiantes participantes en el programa en línea mejoran su actitud y ejecución hacia las ciencias, matemáticas y el trabajo académico en general.
La campaña de Liberty “Convierte tu crédito en ayuda para el sur” se llevó a cabo vía correo electrónico durante el mes de febrero. La misma se realizó para continuar apoyando los esfuerzos de ayuda que Liberty y Liberty Foundation realizaron en los pueblos más afectos tan pronto ocurrió el temblor de magnitud 6.4 que estremeció a toda la Isla. La ayuda incluyó la instalación de Wi-Fi gratis y estaciones de recarga de equipos electrónicos en los refugios de los pueblos de Guánica, Guayanilla, Lajas, Yauco, Peñuelas y Sabana Grande. También se distribuyeron meriendas, mochilas de emergencia y artículos de primera necesidad en refugios y comunidades de los pueblos más afectados.

2,000 STUDENTS IN THE SOUTHWEST HAVE ACCESS TO ONLINE EDUCATION THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF LIBERTY CUSTOMERS WHO DONATED $96,450 TO LIBERTY FOUNDATION
The funds brought the New Virtual School to students and teachers who, after the earthquakes, also faced challenges with the school system shut down due to the coronavirus emergency.
San Juan, Puerto Rico –Liberty Puerto Rico customers made it possible for 2,000 public high school students in the island’s southwest region to finish the semester through the Dale la Nueva Escuela Virtual a un niño (Give a Child the New Virtual School) project thanks to the $96,450 they contributed to Liberty Foundation, by donating the credits they would have received because of the earthquakes at the beginning of the year.
“We are grateful for the generosity of our customers and the trust that they have placed in our foundation. Fulfilling the commitment that we made to them, the funds were used to give 2,000 public high school students and their teachers in Guánica, Yauco, Guayanilla, Peñuelas and Ponce who were impacted by the earthquakes and the coronavirus epidemic access to a tool that allowed them to finish the academic year,” said the president of Liberty Foundation, Naji Khoury, who is also the president and CEO of Liberty Puerto Rico.
As a matter of fact, students will be able to continue using this tool during the first two months of the school year that begins in August. The extension of licenses for the NVS’s use aims to address any possible gaps that may have come up during the second semester of this past school year, which was suddenly interrupted due to the total lockdown decreed by the government to stop the spread of the pandemic.
The $96,450 were raised as part of an invitation that Liberty made to its customers to donate the credits that they received for service interruptions caused by the January 7 earthquakes to continue helping the southwestern towns. Over 20,000 customers of the telecommunications company chose to donate their credit to Liberty Foundation, Liberty’s social responsibility arm, for this purpose.
The students and teachers who benefited directly from this program attend schools that were declared unsafe. At the time the public school system was shut down on March 15 to stop the spread of the coronavirus, they were taking classes in temporary facilities. Thanks to a partnership with the OE-Innovative Technology for Education Foundation, students and teachers from the following schools will be able to access the New Virtual School’s platform from their smartphones, tablets or computers: Áurea Quiles High School in Guánica (220 participants); Occupational, Vocational and Technical School in Yauco (567 participants); Asunción Rodríguez Soto High School in Guayanilla (421 participants); Josefa Vélez High School in Peñuelas (597 participants), and Dr. Pila High School in Ponce (195 participants). In the case of the Yauco school, for example, teachers and students used the virtual education platform for 25,580 hours during the last two months of last year’s second semester, according to information shared during the school’s graduation for its 242 senior year students.
“We had spent 10 days under the tents and then the social distancing order started. Our students were facing physical, emotional, and academic disadvantages. In these challenging times, the opportunity that Liberty Foundation and the OE-ITE Foundation are giving us so that our students can continue expanding their knowledge with the New Virtual School means that not only will they be able to finish the school year, it also means that they can acquire all of the skills that will they need to be successful in the future,” said María de los Ángeles Ortiz Rodríguez, director of the Áurea E. Quiles School in Guánica.
The Dale la Nueva Escuela Virtual a un niño initiative is a multisector effort organized by the OE-ITE Foundation that seeks to offer an effective alternative to keep the over 30,000 students who were affected by the school closings after the January 2020 earthquakes from falling behind academically. The New Virtual School includes planning guides for teachers, as well as tests and exercises adjusted to the Department of Education’s standards. The platform integrates students, parents, and teachers in one system and provides them with support through counseling and technical assistance provided by educational instructors trained to use the New Virtual School. As a matter of fact, two independent studies show that students that participate in the online program improve their attitude and performance in science, mathematics, and academic work in general.
Liberty’s Convierte tu crédito en ayuda para el sur (Turn Your Credit into Aid for the South) campaign was carried out through e-mail during February. It was conducted to continue supporting the aid efforts that Liberty and Liberty Foundation carried out in the hardest-hit towns right after the 6.4 earthquake that shook the entire island. The aid included the installation of free Wi-Fi and electronic device charging stations at shelters in Guánica, Guayanilla, Lajas, Yauco, Peñuelas and Sabana Grande. Snacks, emergency backpacks and basic staples were also distributed at shelters and communities in the hardest-hit towns.
