- A través de esta iniciativa Bayer en Juana Díaz ayudará a plantar y cultivar árboles para alimento y hábitat de la cotorra en el Bosque Estatal de Río Abajo en Utuado.
Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico – El pasado mes de septiembre la compañía agrícola Bayer Crop Science y el Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales de Puerto Rico (DRNA) oficializaron un acuerdo colaborativo mediante memorando de entendimiento para apoyar el programa de recuperación de la cotorra puertorriqueña. El mismo se llevará a cabo en el Bosque Estatal de Río Abajo en Utuado y se extenderá hasta septiembre de 2026.
Mediante este acuerdo, el DRNA proveerá a Bayer semillas de árboles nativos del bosque, que la compañía germinará y cultivará en el invernadero para la horticultura de árboles que Bayer utiliza para estos esfuerzos e iniciativas de extensión comunitaria. Las mismas son coordinadas por el Programa de Reforestación de Bayer ‘Borrando Huella Creando Hábitat’, dirigido por el agrónomo Francisco Muñiz, especialista en investigación agronómica en Bayer Crop Science Puerto Rico.
“A través de esta iniciativa, estamos colaborando en la producción de árboles, tanto para el alimento de la cotorra puertorriqueña, como para la salud, biodiversidad y reforestación del Bosque de Río Abajo”, explicó el agrónomo Muñiz. “Nuestro rol en esta colaboración consiste en la siembra y producción de los árboles, y luego apoyar al Departamento en sus esfuerzos de reforestación en el bosque. Tanto como empleados de Bayer, como ciudadanos puertorriqueños, nos preocupamos por el ambiente y por Puerto Rico. Agradecemos a Tanya Martínez, líder del programa de recuperación de la cotorra puertorriqueña, a todo el equipo en el Departamento, y al secretario Rafael Machargo por la oportunidad de continuar colaborando”.
Esta iniciativa ambiental – el cuarto que realiza la compañía desde principios de 2021 – surge del interés de ambas entidades en aumentar la efectividad del programa de recuperación de la cotorra, además del compromiso compartido de apoyar esfuerzos de sostenibilidad, conservación, restauración y reforestación en Puerto Rico. A largo plazo, la iniciativa persigue las metas de establecer un corredor ecológico de áreas reforestadas desde Utuado hasta Maricao para el hábitat de la cotorra puertorriqueña, como también aumentar números de la cotorra y, eventualmente, sacarla de la lista peligro de extinción.

Desde el 2018, la multinacional Bayer Group lanzó el programa corporativo “Planet Impact” con el objetivo de intensificar significativamente sus esfuerzos de sostenibilidad alrededor del mundo. Otras iniciativas que ha realizado el programa ‘Borrando Huella Creando Hábitat’ durante el 2021 incluyen el donativo de 456 árboles a Siempre Verde y el Comité Pro-Desarrollo de Maunabo para la Reserva Natural Humedal Punta Tuna en Maunabo para contribuir a mitigar los daños que sufrió por los embates del huracán María, la celebración del Día del Planeta Tierra en colaboración con el programa educativo “Crece y Aprende” de Bayer mediante actividades educativas en tres escuelas elemental e intermedia y el donativo de 200 árboles a los estudiantes, y la construcción de la tercera barrera de viento verde en la Comunidad Arús en Juana Díaz mediante la siembra de 379 árboles nativos de 19 diferentes especies.

Bayer, PRDNER sign collaborative agreement to benefit the Puerto Rican parrot
- Through this initiative Bayer in Juana Díaz will help plant and grow trees to provide food and habitat for parrots at the Río Abajo State Forest in Utuado.
Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico – Last September, agricultural company Bayer Crop Science and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (PRDNER) formalized a collaborative agreement through a memorandum of understanding to support the Puerto Rican parrot’s recovery program. The program will take place at the Río Abajo State Forest in Utuado and will run through September 2026.
Through this agreement, the PRDNER will provide Bayer with seeds of the forest’s native trees which the company will germinate and harvest in the tree horticulture greenhouse that Bayer uses for these community extension efforts and initiatives. These are coordinated by Bayer’s Borrando Huella Creando Hábitat (Erasing Footprint, Creating Habitat) Reforestation Program, which is led by agronomist Francisco Muñiz, agriculture research specialist at Bayer Crop Science Puerto Rico.
“Through this initiative, we are collaborating in the production of trees, not just to feed the Puerto Rican parrot but also for the health, biodiversity and reforestation of the Río Abajo Forest,” explained Muñiz. “Our role in this collaboration consists of planting and producing trees and later supporting the department in its reforestation efforts at the forest. As Bayer employees and Puerto Rican citizens, we care about the environment and about Puerto Rico. We thank Tanya Martínez, leader of the Puerto Rican parrot recovery program, the entire team at the department, and Secretary Rafael Machargo for the opportunity to continue collaborating.”
This environmental initiative – the fourth one that the company has conducted since the beginning of 2021 – was born out of the desire from both entities to increase the parrot recovery program’s effectiveness, in addition to the shared commitment to support sustainability, conservation, restoration and reforestation efforts in Puerto Rico. In the long term, the initiative seeks to establish an ecological corridor of reforested areas from Utuado to Maricao for the Puerto Rican parrot habitat, as well as increase the parrot’s numbers and, eventually, get it out of endangered species list.

Other initiatives performed by the Borrando Huella Creando Hábitat program in 2021 include a 456 tree donation to Siempre Verde and the Maunabo Pro-Development Committee for the Punta Tuna Wetland Nature Reserve in Maunabo to help mitigate the damage it suffered from the ravages of Hurricane Maria, the Earth Day celebration in collaboration with Bayer’s “Crece y Aprende” educational program through educational activities in three elementary and middle schools and a donation of 200 trees to the students, and the construction of the third green wind barrier at the Arús Community in Juana Díaz through the planting of 379 native trees from 19 different species.
“This is a new chapter in the collaborations we have been making through the years with community organizations and government agencies to foster sustainability in the country,” added Miguel Pereira, government, and community affairs manager at Bayer Crop Science en Puerto Rico.
