20 años de “Diego Torres – MTV Unplugged”

Miami, Florida – Se cumplen dos décadas del primer disco en vivo de Diego Torres, trabajo icónico que hizo extender las fronteras del cantante argentino a Latinoamérica, y que fue grabado y filmado para la cadena MTV en 2004.

Este acústico, con producción de Afo Verde y el propio Diego Torres, fue el primero además en ser plasmado fuera de USA, realizado en el ex estudio Baires de la ciudad de Buenos Aires.

Por este motivo, se estarán publicando durante los próximos meses, por primera vez y con calidad mejorada, los videos de este álbum en su canal oficial en YouTube, en el que, además, podrá verse una entrevista junto a Sofi Martinez, convertida en charla distendida, un viaje en el tiempo recordando anécdotas e historias del MTV Unplugged. Realizada en mayo 2023.

“Para mí el MTV Unplugged es el disco más importante, más emblemático. No nos dimos cuenta y sin querer hicimos un disco hermoso. A lo mejor porque lo vivimos con mucho entusiasmo, con mucha libertad; nos conectamos con la música y eso generó algo muy puro”, dijo Diego Torres en una entrevista para MTVLA.

Filmado en un recreado estudio que dejó traslucir exactamente el espíritu de otros Unplugged de MTV.

Con invitados de la talla de Julieta Venegas en “Sueños” con su dulce voz y acordeón – también participó con este instrumento en “Que no me pierda”-, Vicentico en Usted – canción con quien Torres comparte autoría – o ese cierre a pura emoción en “Color Esperanza” con los tambores de los niños y niñas de La Chilinguita, este álbum vendió más de un millón y medio de unidades.

Ganador de un Latin GRAMMY® como Mejor Ingeniería de Grabación (Gustavo Borner), tres premios Gardel como Realización del Año, Mejor Álbum Artista Masculino Pop y Personalidad del Año y un MTVLA como Mejor Artista Pop.

Junto con agotar diecisiete Luna Park, otro logro del disco fue alcanzar el nivel de disco de platino en México, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay y Perú y cuádruple platino en Argentina.

En esta grabación, el cantautor regala una perla extra al dedicar el tema “Tal vez” a su madre, figura indiscutida del arte argentino, la recordada Lolita Torres. Esto sucede con el artista al piano, recurso que también utiliza para la versión balada de “Donde van”.

El grupo de artistas que acompañó durante años a Torres, también dejó su huella en este trabajo que ya es una parte de la historia de la música argentina. Encabezaron esta lista de músicos, su tríada coral durante años, Magalí Bachor, Alex Batista – coautor además del primer corte de difusión “Cantar hasta morir”- y Dorita Chávez quien recuerda con mucho amor esta experiencia:

“Cantar los coros del Unplugged de Diego Torres fue una de las mejores experiencias en lo laboral como sesionista, que me ha tocado en toda mi carrera. Formé parte de su banda desde 2002 hasta el 2008. La preparación para la grabación de ese disco consistió en muchísimos ensayos en el Estudio El Santito, con la producción de Afo Verde, quien daba sus toques finales a la labor de días y días. Fue alucinante ser parte de la cocina de esos sonidos. Cantar los tres esas armonías sosteniendo la voz principal de Diego, resultó extremadamente gratificante”. DC.

Otra sorpresa que deparó esta grabación fue la gran participación del “Dj acústico” Mr. Miguelius quien cuenta cómo llegó allí:

“En ese Unplugged todos los músicos que participaron formaban parte de un gran sello y yo no era nadie, sólo venía haciendo algunas cosas del palo de la música electrónica, pero Afo y Diego llegan a contactarse conmigo. Hice la prueba, y salí de allí con un cd con dos canciones para ensayar, ya que tanto el ensayo como la prueba debían ser exactamente lo mismo. A partir de allí estuve un año y medio de gira nacional, incluidos los diecisiete Luna Park, gira internacional, y los mejores recuerdos”.

Diego Torres en los extras del DVD también habla sobre este encuentro con el “Sr. Multitráckea” como él mismo lo llamó: “Yo quería meter unos scratches en “La última Noche”, lo citamos a Miguelius y cuando lo escuché me fascinó. Quedé sorprendido, me parece que tiene un talento bárbaro y la situación de escenario en medio de la orquesta que se dio fue una locura que se nos ocurrió con Afo y quedó buenísima”.

Con arreglos de una gran orquesta, y su banda, guitarras acústicas, batería, percusiones, vientos y teclados Diego Torres MTV Unplugged es una fiesta y a la vez un destacado acontecimiento artístico que conmovió al público presente durante la grabación y lo sigue haciendo con cada persona que vuelve a escucharlo.

Hoy, veinte años después, pero con la frescura de un sonido tan joven, que parece que fue ayer, podrán disfrutarse en el canal oficial de Diego Torres en YouTube.

Miami, Florida – It’s been two decades since Diego Torres’s first live album, an iconic work that expanded the Argentine singer’s reach to all Latin America. This album was recorded and filmed for MTV in 2004.

This acoustic album, produced by Afo Verde and Diego Torres himself, was the first to be recorded outside of the USA, taking place at the former Baires Studio in Buenos Aires.

To commemorate this anniversary, for the first time ever, improved-quality videos of this album were released on Diego Torres’s official YouTube channel. Additionally, an interview with Sofi Martinez -May 2023-, turned into a relaxed chat, is available, where they remember some anecdotes and stories from the MTV Unplugged.

“For me, the MTV Unplugged album is the most important, the most emblematic. Without realizing it, we made a beautiful album, maybe because we lived it with a lot of enthusiasm and freedom; we connected with the music, and that generated something very pure,” said Diego Torres in an interview with MTVLA.

It was filmed in a recreated studio that perfectly captured the spirit of other MTV Unplugged sessions.

With participations like Julieta Venegas in “Sueños” with her sweet voice and accordion—also playing this instrument in “Que no me pierda”—Vicentico in “Usted,” a song he co-wrote with Diego Torres, and an emotional finale with “Color Esperanza” featuring the drums of the children from La Chilinguita. This is an album that sold over one and a half million copies.

The album won a Latin GRAMMY® for Best Recording Engineering (Gustavo Borner), three Gardel Awards for Achievement of the Year, Best Male Pop Artist Album, and Personality of the Year, and an MTVLA award for Best Pop Artist.

In addition to selling out seventeen Luna Park shows, another achievement of the album was reaching platinum status in Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Peru, and quadruple platinum in Argentina.

In this recording, the singer-songwriter gives a special tribute by dedicating the song “Tal vez” to his mother -undisputed figure of Argentine art- the beloved Lolita Torres. This happens with the artist at the piano, a resource also used in the ballad version of “Donde van.”

The group of artists who accompanied Diego Torres for years also left their mark on this work, which has become part of Argentine music history. Leading this group were his longtime backup singers: Magalí Bachor, Alex Batista—also the co-writer of the lead single “Cantar hasta morir”—and Dorita Chávez, who fondly recalls this experience: “Singing the backing vocals for Diego Torres’s Unplugged was one of the best professional experiences I’ve ever had. I was part of his band from 2002 to 2008. The preparation for the album involved numerous rehearsals at El Santito Studio, with Afo Verde’s production giving the final touches to days and days of work. It was amazing to be part of the creation of those sounds. Singing those harmonies with the three of us supporting Diego’s lead voice was extremely gratifying.”

Another surprise from this recording was the significant contribution of the “acoustic DJ” Mr. Miguelius, who shared how he got involved: “In that Unplugged, all the participating musicians were part of a major label, and I was a nobody, just doing some electronic music. But Afo and Diego reached out to me. I did the audition and left with a CD of two songs to practice, as both the audition and rehearsal had to be exactly the same. From then on, I spent a year and a half on a national tour, including the seventeen Luna Park shows, an international tour, and the best memories.”

In the DVD extras, Diego Torres also talks about this meeting with the “Mr. Multitráckea,” as he called him: “I wanted to add some scratches to “La última Noche,” so we invited Miguelius, and when I heard him, I was fascinated. I was surprised; I think he has an incredible talent, and the stage setup amidst the orchestra was a crazy idea that Afo and I came up with, and it turned out great.”

With arrangements by a great orchestra, his band, acoustic guitars, drums, percussion, winds, and keyboards, Diego Torres MTV Unplugged is a celebration and a significant artistic event that moved the audience during the recording and continues to do so, with everyone who listens to it again.
